Going fishing with drones: clearly a little bit awesome; clearly not entirely smart. We’ve previously covered the Ryot guys putting a line on a DJI Phantom 3 here. Sea Ulcer Aerial Media went one better, sending what looks like a Phantom 4 out to sea to catch enormous longtail tuna.
(If you want to see someone very nearly going fishing with a drone go to the bottom).
And which they did with aplomb. Adding technology to fishing isn’t always fair game – fishing with dynamite isn’t cool at all. While sending expensive kit out to sea is risky business, you can legitimately find fish that you wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise and without the bother of a boat.
The clip above was shot and edited by Jaiden Maclean while Byron Leal provided the fishing expertise.
Meanwhile, here’s the clip from the Ryot team:
The fine folks at dronesdirect.co.uk have in fact set up a fishing drone for just such purposes. The DJI Phatom 4 – Fishing Edition comes with a 100m line and sensors to indicate when you’ve had a bite. It can lift up to 200g. If you want to catch anything much heavier, you might want to consider an ARRI Alexa Drone or a DJI Matrice 600.
And or the low, low price of £15,000 they’ll provide you a DJI Phantom 4 with kit (RRP £1,179 to £1,346) plus a fishing spool, fishing wore and hooks. They do indeed list the product on their website, but it may be a rather expensive price for a fishing spool. Even if it is integrated with the drone.
Tim Morley, MD at DronesDirect.co.uk said, “It is a sure way to add extra excitement and an additional fun element to a great hobby, whilst allowing users to sit back, relax and reap the rewards of this drone fishing buddy. The new way to fish allows users too tap into schools of fish up to 2km from shore without the use of a boat. It also enables adventurers to explore areas of sea and terrain not covered by existing maps and plans. We have enjoyed creating the perfect fisherman’s companion and are delighted to be offering this package to the public.”
And, as promised, here’s someone whose drone very nearly got very wet.
