Star Wars and drones are a natural fit for one another – check out these 6 Star Wars-inspired Drones if you’re in any doubt. The guys at CorridorDigital have gone one better though, with a full Star Wars aerial dogfight created using drone footage. And the Force is most definitely strong in this one.
The short film sees a plucky X-Wing, piloted by R2-D2, taking on a pair of TIE fighters and, naturally, coming out on top. Combining the intensity of drone racing with Star Wars graphics works perfectly: swooping over a lake, under a bridge and through the treeline, it’s spectacular footage, and seamlessly fits into an aerial shoot-out*. The movie even incorporates real drone crash footage as a TIE fighter bites the dust. The team didn’t quite settle on a final subtitle though – should it be ‘The Drone Wars’ or ‘Attack Of The Drones’?**
You might be a teensy bit disappointed to learn that the crew didn’t film with the Air Hogs’ X-Wing drone or something similar; instead, the team superimposed cockpits onto footage shot with racing drones provided and crewed by Rotor Riot. If you want to get your hands on your own X-Wing drone though…
Which might just be the drone you’re looking for. And if you’re wondering how they created the chase, the answers are contained in the extensive behind-the-scenes video below that documents the whole production process:
Hopefully this is only the first of many Stars Wars drone battles we’ll be seeing. Desert? Snow? Abandoned buildings? Looming Star Destroyers? We’ll most definitely take it all. Beyond that we’ll settle for the big screen CGI action of Rogue One and Episode VIII.
* No real lasers were used in the production of this movie; though hapless drones were definitely harmed.
** Another possible subtitle from DP: ‘The DJI Phantom Menace’.
